FHC’s coronavirus response

By Rev. Rick King — What a difference a week makes—along with an irresistible force like the coronavirus.

Things have been changing so fast, I want to update you on steps we’re taking at Falcon Heights Church to protect against community spread of the virus, keep us connected to God and each other, and care for those in our congregation who are in the more vulnerable groups.

Rev. Rick KingVirtuous virtual

We’re discovering that we actually can get used to using online video calling and live video streaming technology, and it doesn’t feel unnatural! One Facebook Live worship service down, who knows how many to go? We had been talking about livestreaming our Sunday service and doing some meetings via Zoom sometime in the future, but we’re up and running with these much faster thanks to COVID-19. I’ve led two Bible studies on Zoom, the Executive Board met on Zoom Tuesday night, and I’ve done two pastoral care visits on Skype. In addition, our church has a free conference call account available in addition to Zoom, where we can host a large group on a single phone call. Watch our Sunday morning live stream

Buttoned-up building

Tuesday night, the Executive Board voted to close our building to all church and community groups until at least April 6, in compliance with orders for social distancing to prevent community spread of the virus. This is subject to change, so watch the TAB newsletter and social media for further information.

Office Manager Shannon Kaiser and I are working remotely in the meantime. The best way to contact both of us is email: Shannon – [email protected]; Rick – [email protected]. I will be stopping by my office periodically throughout the week to check mail delivery and voicemails, but not keeping regular office hours at the church.

Online office hours

Want the comfort of a face-to-face conversation with your pastor? Need counseling, but want more than just a voice at the other end of the phone line? I will be holding office hours on the Zoom videoconferencing platform at my normal walk-in times of 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, so sign up for a half-hour Zoom visit HERE and you’ll be sent the link and an access code to join the call at the time. OR if you prefer, you may simply sign up for a half-hour phone call.

Other steps we’ve taken

Shannon is maintaining a list of what some of you have already offered to do for others (run errands, watch kids while you get out, help you get set up with Instacart delivery from Cub Foods, etc.), and keeping track of needs you express. Charleen Prill, Linda Owen and I, along with Lynne Bradbury and the Membership Ministry Team, are teaming up to call everyone in our database to check on how you’re doing, what you need, prayer requests, etc. And Shannon is adding to the TAB a list of suggested activities, sort of a “survival guide” during our period of confinement. Not your usual Holy Week and Easter

We’ll continue doing Facebook Live webcasts of our worship Service at 10:30 (links at the top of the TAB, under “This Sunday”). To make this sustainable beyond a few Sundays, we need a couple of quick learners or people experienced with Facebook Live to get orientation from Noah Keitel, who is the primary caregiver for their kids AND a website developer. We’re also looking for donations for purchase of some basic equipment for producing this each week. Noah was good enough to use his own in the early stages, but we need our own at the church.

Communion on Palm Sunday, April 5, will be virtual as well. We’ll ask you to use whatever you have on hand for the Bread and Cup, and take communion in your home or wherever you are, together. Specific Holy Week and Easter plans are still in development, but this year we are not having in-person worship for these holidays.

Stay tuned for more information about worship and other adaptations to our present circumstances. And thanks for being a loving, flexible, connected faith community!

Love,

Rev. Rick

* SILENT PRAYER

* PRAYING TOGETHER (All)
Holy God, ever present with us, we are mindful of these times in which we live. Uncertainty, anxiety, and fear are present among us as we listen to and care for one another in these days. We ask that your peace and healing presence be with us, as we pray for and hold each other in love. We ask your guidance and direction as we live out your command to love one another as we are called to love you. In the name of the one who has called us and prepared us for these challenging days, we pray. Amen.

Our Father-Mother, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. They will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Dementia-friendly worship

A new dementia-friendly worship service for people with memory care needs and their care partners is beginning at Hazel Park UCC in St. Paul. The services will be on Mondays, March 23, April 20, and May 18 at 10 a.m.

These short services will feature favorite hymns, active participation, and joy-filled interaction led by former FHC intern Claire Klein. Claire is a board-certified music therapist and recent seminary graduate. Volunteers will be ready to welcome you and help you feel at home. Contact Claire at [email protected] for more information.

Volunteer at Feed My Starving Children

Let’s volunteer together April 18 at Feed My Starving Children in Coon Rapids. Join us from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to pack food for hungry children around the world. You may either meet us at the location in Coon Rapids (401 93rd Ave. NW) or meet at church at 4:20 p.m. to organize carpooling. It is about a 20-minute drive from church. People of all ages are welcome to join, although children must be 5 or older and children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

We need to give the program our number of volunteers, so please sign up online or email [email protected]. The signup deadline is April 10.

Each volunteer packs about $50 worth of food. While donations are not required to participate, Feed My Starving Children appreciates help covering the costs. More information

This is a joint outreach project of the Intergenerational and Outreach Teams. We hope this offers our congregation another opportunity to volunteer together and assist one of our local non-profit organizations.

House building in Vietnam and Minnesota

You think house building in Minnesota is a challenge? Wait until you hear from Terra and Erica Lumley about building homes in South Vietnam!

Come to First Hour on Sunday, March 22, at 9:15 a.m. to hear from Terra and Erica about the homes they helped build in 2018 in Dong Thop Province in South Vietnam. The work was part of a Thrivent Big Build. Over 200 volunteers from New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, Vietnam and the U.S. joined to build 22 homes in just one week. Terra and Erica worked on two homes with other TCHFH (Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity) staff. Their goal was not to finish the homes, but to finish all the walls and floors.

Terra has been working for Habitat for Humanity for the past 21 years. She has been our supervisor with the Holy Hammers coalition for the past three years. She will again lead the build this year in St. Paul. Her spouse, Erica, is a marriage and family therapist and works for NW Passage in Frederic, Wisconsin, near their small farm. They have two children. Please come and welcome the whole family to Falcon Heights!

Want to help with our build this year? The foundation is in and we are recruiting volunteers NOW! Your help is needed to make a house a home for a well deserving family. We have slots open on April 24 and May 7 and 13. To sign up, contact Lynne Meyer at [email protected].

Storyteller at First Friday Fellowship

Storyteller Bill Chadwick will be our guest at First Friday Fellowship at 10 a.m. April 3. Bill Chadwick is a longtime Presbyterian minister and currently a fledgling stand-up comedian. He has written a book of “mostly true stories of families, friends, faith and foibles.” Bill will share stories from his book.

Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday

Join us for our all-ages Mardi Gras celebration and Ash Wednesday service this Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 5:30-7 p.m. Wear fun bright colors, a costume, or anything festive for the evening.

Plan on card making, face painting, and Fruit Loop necklace making beginning at 5:30. We will transition to our pancake dinner followed by games and a parade. The evening will end with a brief Ash Wednesday service with Rev. Rick. We hope you can join us for an evening of fun and fellowship!

Minnesota FoodShare drive begins

The annual Minnesota FoodShare drive has begun. Help stock the food shelves to combat hunger in our area.

When: Sunday, Feb. 16 through Sunday, April 5

Recipients: All food and money will go to the Department of Indian Work.

Where do I bring the food? Leave it in sturdy bags/boxes by the white buckets in the entry or in the shopping cart in the coat rack area.

What types of food? Non-perishable food in cans and packages. Same as what you want your family to eat: vegetables (especially varieties of beans), fruit, and the same types of foods with protein that Outreach requests monthly. Don’t forget healthy foods that kids like to eat too.

Is there a maximum? Absolutely NOT! Nancy Duffrin and Chuck Gramith would LOVE to make multiple trips to the DIW with a minivan or pickup truck loaded down.

Checks? Make checks out to Department of Indian Work. Mail or put in offering plate.

Cash? Put it in the white envelope in the pews with your name on it and indicate DIW on the envelope.Food donations
