Free STAR-lite training in healing and justice

A free one-day STAR-Lite training will take place April 21 in St. Paul. STAR-Lite is an evidence-based training that integrates several fields. These include neuropsychology, trauma healing and resilience. The training also covers restorative justice, nonviolent conflict transformation, and broadly defined spirituality. Everyone is welcome.

This training is in line with Falcon Heights Church’s mission to continue racial reconciliation work and become a trauma-aware congregation. Rev. Rick and Sara Wright have taken the training and can answer any questions you have.

The Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute (www.mnpeace.org) sponsors this training, with support from foundation grants. There is space for 60; you must pre-registrer. Details and online registration

Sign up now for Holy Hammers and help build a house for a family this spring.

Falcon Heights Church is part of a consortium of 14 north suburban churches that partner with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity to build affordable family homes such as this one.

This year’s build is at 717 Geranium Ave. E., near Payne and Maryland avenues on St. Paul’s East Side. Framing begins in April and interior work will take place in June.

Stop by the Holy Hammers display in the Gathering Room to learn more about this year’s Habitat build and how to sign up to volunteer. Our church’s work dates are April 27, May 10 and 23, and June 21.

Host homeless families

Help host homeless families for the Project Home Emergency Shelter at New Life Presbyterian Church, 965 W. Larpenteur in Roseville.

Each night in April, New Life hosts a family homeless shelter at the church at Victoria and Larpenteur. We serve up to 20 guests, all families with children, who are temporarily without housing. The Project Home staff screens the families, who come by bus from the Family Center day shelter in downtown St. Paul. This is New Life’s ninth year. Members of Falcon Heights Church have participated in the past.

  • Evening Hosts (5:30-8:30 p.m.) greet guest families (along with Project Home staff), serve an evening snack (provided), chat with guests and play with children.
  • Overnight Hosts (8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; until 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday) help families settle for the night, spend the night in a separate sleeping area (beds provided), serve a light breakfast (provided) and tidy up the space.
  • Training is provided online, in print or in person.
  • Children and youth are encouraged to serve as hosts alongside their parents or guardians.

Get more information or sign up online.

Or contact New Life’s volunteer coordinator, Jan Hubbell, at [email protected] or 651-489-4713. Thank you for sharing God’s love through this ministry!

Donate to March food drive

We’re beginning a month-long food drive to collect food and money for the Department of Indian Work food shelf. Interfaith Action in St. Paul runs this year-round program.

Your donations to the Generous Spirit Food Drive through the end of March will directly benefit hungry people. Donations to this drive also helps determine the amount of the incentive grants the food shelf receives from Minnesota FoodShare. The incentives are based on the total weight of food received along with dollars received.

High-priority items include dry and canned goods and personal care items. Read more

Place food donations in the bins in the church lobby. To donate money, write a check payable to Interfaith Action with “Food Drive” in the memo line and put in the collection plate. You can also give online at interfaithaction.org/donate.

Food shelf facts

  • Adults, children and seniors made more than 3 million visits to Minnesota food shelves in 2015. That’s almost 9,000 people per day seeking food assistance.
  • At the Department of Indian Work, 2,141 people visited the food shelf last year and 69,095 pounds of food were distributed.
  • Last March, together with area faith communities and individual donors, Interfaith Action collected 3,869 pounds of food and raised $14,028 in donations.
